Mike and Barbara Getz own and operate all three Grass Valley theaters and the Nevada Theatre Film Series in Nevada City. They are passionate about creating outstanding movie experiences for this community. This is why each theatre is clean, staffed with friendly, helpful employees, has comfy seats, and state-of-the-art projector and sound systems. The popcorn is delicious, too!
Mike Getz began his career in the movie business in the early 60’s. He created the first wildly successful midnight movie series in Hollywood in 1963 and helped launch the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” midnight movie phenomenon in theaters throughout the country. In order to view independent films locally, Mike and Barbara started the Nevada Theatre Film Series in 1979. Mike’s talent to entertain the audience is evident in the 33-year success story of this popular Nevada City Sunday night tradition.
In 1989, The Getz’s opened Sierra Cinemas, a 4 screen, first run movie theatre in Grass Valley. In 2001, they opened Sutton Cinemas, a 2 screen theatre in the Brunswick Plaza. In December, 2003, The Getz’s purchased the Del Oro Theatre in downtown Grass Valley and began an extensive remodeling effort, which culminated in the Grand Re-Opening and Tower Lighting ceremony in October, 2004. Thousands of folks filled the streets to witness the lighting of the tower, which had been dark for over 20 years.
In 2009 the Getz’s entered the digital revolution by installing a digital 3D projector in the largest auditorium at Sierra Cinemas. Following the phenomenal success of the blockbuster Avatar, Sierra Cinemas upgraded a second auditorium to digital 3D in March 2010.
In 2009, Mike and Barbara's daughter Azriel and her husband, Michael LaMarca came on board full time to make Sierra Theaters a true family business committed to quality entertainment for our community.
In the fall of 2011, Sierra Theaters completed a full digital conversion, installing digital projection and sound in all the auditoriums at Sierra Cinemas, Del Oro Theatre, and Sutton Cinemas, as well as the Real-D 3D system at Del Oro. A major upgrade of sound and picture quality, this digital conversion brings all nine auditoriums up to industry standard, state of the art presentation.
